The Violation of the rights of domestic workers in Bangladesh: Islamic and Conventional law perspectives

Abstract

Recruiting domestic workers for the daily housekeeping is a common household economic feature in Bangladesh. However, even though the practice is more like a contract selling of labour, it still remains as a social contract. It has yet to get proper institutional recognition and legal protection. As a result violation of domestic worker’s rights has become a common phenomenon in the country. Using interviews and other primary sources, this article examines the current domestic workers’ rights in Bangladesh from the perspectives of legal institutionalization and its practice.
